1.Election Observation

The Plateau Peace Practitioners Network has been actively involved in observing crucial elections in Plateau State, ensuring transparency and fairness in the electoral process. 

Bye-Election, February 26, 2022: the network observed the bye-election for the Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency on February 26, 2022. This observation was conducted through online platforms by citizen polling unit observers and collective observation of the network members, with local approval from INEC. A WhatsApp online situation room has been opened comprising representatives from the Independent National Election Commission (INEC), the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Civil Society organizations (CSOs) Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs), Students, media practitioners, youth leaders etc. Media platforms through the Radio and Television were also utilized for advocacy, particularly to appeal for calm amidst protests by supporters of different political parties.

Rerun Elections, February 3, 2024:Additionally, the network diligently observed the court-ordered rerun elections in Plateau State on February 3, 2024. Citizen polling unit observers and the utilization of online platforms. Similar to the bye-elections, the WhatsApp platform was utilized. Following the challenges faced during the election, a press briefing was conducted by the network on February 4, 2024, to call for calmness, and respect for democracy by actors.  

 

2.Mobilization and Recommendations

Apart from election observation, the network serves as a crucial civil society coordination platform for peace and security. It co-creates with the Plateau Peace Building Agency on the Open Government Partnership in Plateau state. It acts as an entry point for individuals and entities seeking information on peace and security in Plateau State and also leverages its credibility to mobilize participants for various engagements organized by other actors.

The Plateau Peace Practitioners Network collaborates with esteemed organizations including Word Bank Group, Mercy Corps, Interfaith Mediation Network, Plateau Peace Building Agency, and EUJ Peace and Conflict Resolution Institute to ensure effective mobilization and impact recommendations for peace and stability in the region. Through these efforts, the network continues to uphold the values of democracy and promote peaceful coexistence in Plateau State.
